There's loads of utter cr*p on the telly so you don't have to watch the sporting spectacle of the World Cup.
I'm surprised that complaints aren't flooding in about the World Cup filling the schedules - where are you JohnP?
Incidentally, do you folk pay a licence fee for your English-language telly? I'm a bit out of touch, but something tells me you don't, so you're freeloading , while whingeing about the football. Prove me wrong! I don't know. Of course, if I'm right you won't reply!
I'll keep you posted about the sh*te on the telly. There's so much of it you don't even need to get out of bed in the morning. Just stay where you are. B*gger the beauty of a summer's day. But you know that already...

Quite right about the rubbish on tv - its totally mindless.
We do pay tv licence here - to the french treasury - its included in the taxe d'habitation. I suppose technically it covers french tv which is even worse rubbish than the UK - and YES that is possible - so I think that probably suffices.
ps - how's the ear hair - are you finding it a bit warm in this weather?

Very nice of you to ask about the ear hair, bisdu. It is a bit warm for big tufts, but I've found that if I take off all of my clothes and then go to Tesco's, where they have long refrigeration displays, it's ok....

Actually I was expecting Meldrew to have posted by now, but yes I am totally pi**ed of by both major channels being hijacked with weeks of so called sport. England is a total joke as I understand they have lost both their games and are out despite paying a manager millions of pounds along with the equivalent of half the GDP of the country to the players however that seems to be the norm now to pay sportspeople, bankers, politicians and chairmen of companies vast sums of money for being useless and totally incompetent.
Regarding the TV licence, we pay a licence with our tax d'habitation which is for a television receiver just like all the French living in UK pay the equivalent and probably watch French TV.
I probably shall not be watching my TV anytime soon as once the world cup is over it will be wall to wall Wimbledon, Tour de France and commonwealth games after which no doubt the football season will have started again. In reality of course it never stops. I am loosing the will to live and finding it very difficult to resist the overwhelming urge to heave a large brick through my TV screen.

We have sky and French terrestrial - almost 999 channels - French, Engish, US, Ausssie etc etc - almost all rubbish/repeats/mind dumbing nonsense.
Only thing I actually plan to watch is Wallander and even thats a bit weird over the past 2 weeks.
The only reason I have the rest of it on at all is that I have tinnitus and tv stops me hearing the buzzing - but now its becoming a toss up as to which is worse.
That's an accolade for overpaid actors - acting or tinnitus!!

Isn't it just for BBC channels that the license fee is charged in the UK? All other channels being self-funding via advertisements?

In the UK the money from the licence goes to the BBC and as you say the commercial channels are funded by advertising and selling their programmes to other countries. However the licence is actually for operating a television receiver so payable no matter which channels you receive.
