My knowledge of things when it comes to computers is pretty basic. I have an old PC running windows XP and a netbook running windows 7.
I have a friend who works in the security services in the UK and part of his job is to design security software. He has advised me that because Microsoft are no longer supporting windows XP with updates, I should not carry out any financial transactions on a computer running XP as it will be easier for hackers to infiltrate XP and as time passes it will become less and less secure.
He as advised me that as my PC is quite old(approx 8 years)it will not be able to cope with a windows 8 upgrade and I should therefore consider investing in a new computer tower.
I am not trying to scaremonger, I am just passing on what I have been told by a guy who I trust and has nothing to gain by advising me to replace my old system. I know there are some members here who are far more clued up than me in this field and I would be interested to read their comments.

Personally, I'd ditch anything to do with Microsoft and change over to Linux as it will run very happily on less powerful computers. I'm running Linux Mint on this laptop and have a spare laptop which runs Puppy Linux from a USB key. Mint has a very 'Windows' look, you can use 'Libre Office' (a version of Microsoft Office) and it will open your legacy Windows documents. I'm also running Google Chrome or Firefox without a problem. There's also a program (Wine) which will allow you to run Windows programs. I should point out I'm by no means a computer 'geek' and found it reasonably straightforward to change over. You could even have both operating systems on the same computer and boot one or the other at start up. A big plus point for Linux is it's resistance to virus attack. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint

Thanks SP, I am not a fan of Microsoft either, I have been using firefox as my browser for a number of years however I am a little retesent to change the whole operating system as I use an old version of MS publisher for all my AE accounts. Interesting option though, I will see what others say.....
Incidently my PC has a pentium 2.4Ghz processor and 1Go Ram, it has been upgraded once so maybe it is a bit underpowered by todays standards, it does seem a bit slow at times.

This laptop I'm using is about 10 years old and was running Vista on an AMD Athlone S4 X2. Admittedly it has 3GB of memory. I'd guess your MS publisher would be ok but a Google should tell you that. I'll see what info I can dig up myself re how slow a computer will run Linux without a problem. There are many versions and I'd think that an operating system you can fit on a memory stick would run on just about anything.
