You may have heard or read that a new satellite in the 'Sky' cluster at 28 degrees East has come into service during the last few days. Services are being migrated over to Astra 2E, the new satellite, including the remaining ones during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The satellite enthusiast forum I belong to (satellites.co.uk) has compiled a map based on reception reports by contributors. You can check the map here: goo.gl/maps/Ha4xfYou'll see two things, a lack of reports from Northern France (this will change when I submit my findings) and that the need for a larger dish only becomes necessary once you get much further South, probably below Bordeaux. Basically if you are receiving your UK tv without a problem now there is no need to worry.

Thank you for that, the OH has been keeping me awake at night pestering me to fit a 4m dish so that she won't miss Coronation Street

Would this account for why we get reasonably good tv reception but no advert reception - this would normally sound like a good thing, but unfortunately the ads are twice as loud as the programmes they interrupt and consist of crackles flashes and broken transmission?

Nothing to do with your satellite reception per se, more likely to be a problem with your receiver or TV. I know the sound levels on advert breaks can be quite a bit higher than the programs...I think it's to wake you up.....
