I know many people use these heaters. I bought a second-hand one 4 years ago and it has been brilliant.
A few weeks ago it started playing up, it would regularly cut out and give the error code CO2 which means it is detecting Carbon dioxide. I noticed the flame was a bit yellow when working so I decided to have the heater serviced. Not wanting to be without it for a long period this time of year I decided to take it to a large retailer who I knew had their own service department and should be able to turn it round quickly.
Having described the problem, the engineer told me it would cost 70€ to replace the CO2 detector and with the service he quoted me 120-150€ to repair it and said I would be better off buying a new one for around 200€. When I seemed unconvinced he said that given the age of the heater I could spend this money only to find the pump could fail next year and that would again be over 100€ to replace.
I brought the heater home. I have no knowledge of these things but I know that fuel and gas heaters should burn with a blue flame and a yellow flame was a sign it was not right. I was convinced that the CO2 detector was not faulty but doing it's job.
I decided I would remove the covers and have a look. There was a lot of dust and doghair around inside the heater so I carefully vacuumed around then blew everywhere with an airline to clear all the remaining dust. I have had it running all last evening and it is burning with a blue flame and has not cut out once.
Needless to say I am pleased but also annoyed at the con artist who tried to sell me a new machine unnecessarily. My machine is Japanese and is quite expensive to buy new, the cheaper machines are Chinese and I don't need anymore rubbish from there, I have a Chinese pressure washer in my workshop which is brand new and spraying water everywhere but out of the hose.
What I am saying is that if you have an electronic petrole heater and are told it is not worth repairing, get a second opinion!
