Our leckie went off at 7.45pm yesterday, while we were eating dinner! Could have been worse if I had been in the midst of cooking I suppose. It went on and off a few times but mostly stayed off until 3.15pm today. It really made me think about what we take for granted. No hot bath, just a cold wash YUK Fumbling about with a feeble torchlight (reminder to buy batteries). Boiling saucepans on the gas for drinks and washing up water. No TV, no computer, just the Kindle ( thank goodness for the Kindle!) I had tonight's pastime planned, Scrabble by candlelight! All of these things are a pathetic moan when I think of the way people live in other countries, we are extremely lucky to have such a comfortable way of life.

Quite right BC - funny but I was thinking a similar thing last week when I saw someone on 'another forum' complaining that Christmas had been spoiled by people/charities asking for handouts.
You could still play scrabble by candlelight too.

I have been lucky so far with only a few cuts most of which were only a few minutes but it has made me realise how dependant I am. I don't have gas so apart from the obvious like freezer and cooking and light, my petrole heater and boiler will not fire up, no radio or TV or internet. i would hate to be the victim of a major power out like so many unlucky people over the Christmas period.
I am going to keep my eyes open for a second-hand generator.

We had a few days over Christmas with no power and ended up playing Scrabble on Christmas Eve. It's true it does make you think about others though. I am getting increasingly annoyed about the compensation demands in the UK-It's the bloomin' weather and it's a natural phenomenon for goodness sake!!

I think maybe life was richer when people played the piano, sang and played cards in the evening.

Hope our freezer is OK, could be one hell of a stink when we return.

I think the only worry for me if the power is off is the freezer to be honest - just the value of the stuff thats inside which I can't afford to replace .... I was brought up in the country so we often had power-cuts and I love them Here I have a manual petrole heater, double gas ring (camping stove), a manual phone, a mobile phone with a data contract (for surfing) and lotsa candles at the ready
