I have no intention of dissuading you from buying a new laptop, however from what you've said this is more of a software problem rather than hardware.
If all else fails you do have a functioning laptop. If it's reasonably up to date (i.e. about five years old or less) and these issues are software (Windows) based I'd seriously consider backing up your important documents, music, photo's etc. and changing to Linux.
I'm using Linux Mint and to all intents and purposes it looks like Windows. You can use Libre Office which is very similar to Microsoft Office and it will open MS Word files. It supports both Firefox and Chrome browsers. It's also quick to boot up and as a Unix based system is almost virus proof.

Windows 7 is great I don't want to confuse any issues you may have Bis but it seems to me like wot Pete says ... that you are using links and those links are taking you to different browsers. But this is all gunna get confusing so I'll shurrup - wish you were closer! x

Have to be careful not to take this too far off topic but I've used Windows 7 before and it is a good operating system. I only switched to Linux because one day Windows wouldn't load no matter what I tried. Don't be put off by the thought you might be spending all day writing command lines, it isn't like that. The laptop I use everyday was my stepdaughters and she managed to corrupt Windows on it and it's no running Mint without a problem. The other (now backup) one runs a full Puppy Linux O/S from a memory stick. It isn't very pretty but it does the job.....more importantly both are free...

Thanks for the supportt. The truth of the matter is I have no idea what i'm doing.
i'm fine using programs i use but once theres a glitch i'm lost.
The irony of the whole thing is that I have an MSc in computer science - how mad is that? However I got this in the early 90's before the internet, when i specialised in programming in artificial intelligence - that seems a million years ago. Now my 8 year old graddaughter knows more about the damned thing than me.

lol love it Bis .... I studied what they called BASIC programming many many years ago which was a computer language to 'make things happen' but as you say the world moves on and now the software does it all for us.

Quite right Ali I did basic too - d'you remember all those block shaped graphics... and a command called 'go to' which put you in a perpetual loop! Did pascal programming - which I was pretty good at, but my thing at the time was Prolog.(AI) Still got it all on 7 and 5 inch floppies! - Floppies - now that'll confuse the granddaughter.
