I remember years ago I used to live a few miles from Wiscombe Hill Climb in Devon and used to attend the events regularly. There was normally a class for road legal cars and a regular competitor was a guy called Paul Channon who had an AC Cobra. This was the big block V8 (7.7 litre) if my memory serves me with a bank of 4 DCOE twin choke Webber carburetors sat in the Vee. Most competitors wore the standard racing overalls displaying name and blood group whilst Paul would wear shirt, tie, sports jacket and flat cap with a pair of racing gloves. I used to spectate from just below the finish line where the cars had to slow to negociate a sharp hairpin bend before powering up a steep slope to the finish. The track was 3/4 mile in length with the paddock beyond. You could hear the Cobra fire up with it's distintive growl above all other cars and there was always a buzz of excitement in the crowd. As the light went to green on the start line the Cobra would rocket off the line in a cloud of tyre smoke with the driver fighting to keep it in a straight line as it powered to the first tight bend, crackling as it decelerated before growling through a series of s bends then blasting up the final straight to the hairpin. The Cobra would approach at 100mph plus before braking hard and slamming down the gears to drift sideways around the hairpin, driver fighting with opposite lock on the steering wheel and flooring the throttle to power over the finish line in a cloud of tyre smoke. It is a scene that will always live with me, the thrill, the smell, and the sound of that iconic machine being driven to it's limits was an experience to behold. There is no substitute for litres

Wow, can't believe he is still racing, that is the car, what a beast and he used to drive it beautifully, just on the edge of in and out of control.
