We have beams, all treated for worm etc but they look dreadful. They are full of cracks, holes and crevices, not so much aged as devastated.Although we have been here seven years and renovated the rest of the place,we have ignored the beams as don't really know how to make them look better.Anyone got ideas for tarting them up? Or failing that how to register a car!!

Can't help with the beams but you could ask itinerant child about registering a car (or not)

I have seen beams given a coat of plaster put on by hand, in other words just smeared over and then varnished with oak pigment varnish - looks crap!! Leave them as they are, just give a coat of mat varnish if they are not painted already - some people like light coloured oak as if it has been sandblasted some prefer dark oak - personal preference will aid your choice!

BC...I tried to post a photo of my kitchen beam yesterday...hopefully it will work this time. Sanded down and covered with three coats of Baumfix coloured varnish from Lidl's. Attachment Deleted
