20 days to go,the shops are hotting up, what are people planning for the big day? Who has their decorations up already? We spend Christmas, just us two and the dog(s),quiet but we do as we please. I wish we could get together as a family, but my son has to be in Kent to see his children and my Daughter is a home bird.We used to have a riotous Christmas, with the Father in Law topping glasses up every time a sip was taken, I don't think anyone could see straight by the time dinner was served. Sadly that time has gone but we still enjoy the day and due to cooks perks,a box of white kept in the fridge, the dinner can still be a bit hazy.

Have no plans for Xmas, I'll be on my own as per the last three years....(pause while people go 'awwwww') My stepdaughter won't come without her partner and I don't want him here...which is a long, long story. Mum is reasonably happy on her own and it's not really the time of year to consider a long journey to the NE of England. My ladyfriend in South Africa has her children and grandchildren but we'll be in touch on Skype. I'm in a much better frame of mind than I was before I met her anyway, three years ago I had beans on toast for Xmas lunch. My English neighbours will probably turn up during the week after Xmas and my French neighbours keep themselves to themselves. (In 12 years I've spoken to his wife less than five times). It won't stop me putting the tree up and having a few decorations outside though.

Good for you, I think a few decorations lighten the mood and cheer the place up.It's a shame more families can't/won't get together, but family life now can be very complicated.

We shall probably be just the two of us but there is someone we will invite, just that we haven't done so yet! We have a quiet time but we also remember noisier times when our respective (second marriage for us both) families were young - I think there is a time in one's life for each stage, and I am excited for my son and daughter in law as their two are just coming up to 5 and 3 which I think are the perfect age for it - but I don't feel I need to be there with them! We shall roast a goose, as it is our favourite, and have all the trimmings with that. We shall speak with and or Skype all our close family during the day - that is a pleasure in itself. My other son and his girlfriend have a baby girl who is eight weeks old so she will enjoy the pretty lights but not much else this year - next year she'll be opening her own presents! We won't be putting the tree and other indoor decorations up yet awhile - probably weekend after this, but we will probably put Santa up on the windowsill outside with his glass in his hand and lights round him before then as it amuses the neighbours grandchildren - I already have a wooden Advent calendar with little wooden drawers in it ready in the porch for the local grandchildren.
We love Christmas and when we were first here the neighbours used to worry about our being away from family and used to come round for a drink once they'd sobered up from their night before celebrations but often found us still eating (we stick to our Christmas day meal, even though I am half Swiss so have experienced both ways) and realised we are quite happy doing our own thing.
Is it too soon to say Happy Christmas everyone? Oops, I've said it!

Just the two of us plus dog this year. Will put tree and decorations up the week before.Going to roast a capon etc. Will skype our 'children' and open pressies together in morning.Brother.will skype us too. Be lovely to see them all.Had some lovely family xmases over the years, especially when the children were young. We spent the last 3 years at a hotel in the walled city at St.Malo.They have a superb street market and such friendly people in the hotel for the delicious Xmas meals. The dog was made welcome too.Xmas day it was lovely to stroll on the beach and watch the french families out and about. Will be content at home this year.
