Was mulling over trying one but that would make three in use here and may appear a little excessive LOL. I've heard a lot of good things about them and the hobby forum I belong to has a section devoted to them: www.satellites.co.uk/forums/735-skybox-hd-receivers/Bear in mind a couple of things though. As far as I'm aware it only supports now and next EPG, not 7 day. There are lots on Ebay with a "free gift"...this is normally a 6 month subscription to a pay server, illegally decrypting Sky cards and personally I'd avoid them. Might I ask why you are interested in a Skybox?

oh ok........it's just they aren't easy boxes to navigate and set up. While they are really excellent for multi sat reception or using with a motor, if you only wanted to watch Sky there are easier alternates. However if you want to experiment there's plenty of support on the internet.

My friend bought one with the gift included, I was curious as to how that could be available so freely on such sites as Amazon and Ebay if it's illegal. Sky are not the sort of company who would just sit back and be ripped off.
Thanks for the link, I'll have a look.

It's not illegal to advertise it as a "gift" as long as you don't specify. It's what is known as "card sharing" and usually the legal card is in a Linux based receiver (not a Sky box) which acts as a server. The remote Skybox is then classed as a "client" and the decryption is sent over the internet. It's a convoluted way of cheating Sky basically. Your friend may find the encrypted channels stuttering and they may very well be unwatchable at times, it depends how many other "clients" are using their "free gift".
Sky are looking to tighten up both encryption and the ability to use the viewing card in any receiver other than a Sky box. As you say they don't like to ripped off. We ban any talk of card sharing on the Sats forum.
I don't have any subscription to Sky by the way. I have six dishes (two on motors and four fixed which lets me access 16 satellites) and am quite happy with over 3,000 FTA channels, though many are not in English.

By the way, maybe I should point out that although it's called a "Skybox" it has nothing to do with Sky itself. The receiver used to be branded an "Openbox".
