I am concerned that there is a real danger of this conflict escalating out of control. with the West looking to arm the rebels and Russia supporting Assad this has the potential to get serious.
So what is the UN doing? Well as usual, **** all. they are an absolutely total waste of space.
Bashar Al-Assad is a war criminal, a deluded murdering headcase who will do anything to cling on to power, another Gadaffi and he deserves the same fate.
If the West and Russia start arming opposing sides it can only escalate the conflict killing thousands more innocent citizens and achieving nothing. The UN needs to get off it's arse, declare Assad a war criminal and issue an international arrest warrant. Then send in a crack multi-national team and take out Assad and his immediate ministers. I realise this strategy is not without risks but as long as Assad is in power things can only get worse.

Sometimes its better the radical nutter that you know in power than a.n. other more radical and a bigger nutter to succeed to the leadership its all a very unstable region of the world

Well John P since you posted things have moved on a bit? You say the West wants to arm the rebels but it appears that not all of the West is agreed and only America in the guise of Obama and mates and our 'Dave' (apparently on his own) are now in favour as Putin appeared to make a valid argument that arming a bunch of thugs may be more damaging than leaving things as they are. With no oil to argue over the West does not have the heart for this anyway. As for the thousands getting killed, this will continue to happen irrespective as to who aids who in the conflict - Darwin's point about survival of the fittest springs to mind?

Yes things can change rapidly in this kind of situation but two things remain, a) The UN is doing nothing and b) Assad is a desperate, murdering, power crazed war criminal who needs to be stopped
If the G8 can get an agreement to press for peace talks that would be a step in the right direction to prevent further arms flooding into the region but there has to be the will for peace on both sides and I doubt that is there at the moment.

Agree totally, seems like so many wars in the past that both sides think they can win and that God (whoever he is) is on their side.

Believing God to be on your side in war is another way of justifying what you do as a 'just' war....
It assuages any sense of guilt...
My re-reading of WWII leads me to believe that Hitler justified his actions based on his notion of a 'just' cause, i.e. that Germany had been wronged after WWI, and without citing God, his troops agreed with him...
ps: Not sure if any of that makes sense. I know what I mean. It doesn't follow that you do....

Still Assad continues to slaughter his own people and still the rest of the world stands by and watches. Everyone seems to be waiting for America to make a move and it shouldn't be up to any single country. Set up an international snatch squad. Assad is a dangerous deluded mass murderer, whether he can be proved to have used chemical weapons or not is largely irrelevant. He has the blood of thousands on his hands and is no better than Bin Laden or Gadaffi and deserves the same fate. He needs to be arrested as a war criminal and if he resists, take him out. Forget the UN, they are a complete waste of space and by the time they make a decision it will all be over.

If as has been suggested they take out Assad, what will happen. Look at Iraq and everywhere else the Good boys have been. it would be an even bigger blood bath, im not pro Assad but I do not think he was the one who just used chemical weapons, I think you will find its been the opposition who have done this to get the Americans involved.
