Hubby has just been diagnosed with shy high choloesterol Has any one got the same problem and if so what sort of things do you eat? He loves meat , chocolate, dairy, all the things you shouldn't have! He will eat fish but not shell fish and his vegetable limits even after years of me trying to broaden them are still shakey. Yesterday I made a chick pea and broccoli curry and threw in a tin of lentils which he didn't even realise was there so i guess the secret may be hiding them, like an enfant

Sadly it is the tasty fatty foods which do the damage - so eat less cheese, butter, fried food, full cream milk etc. Eat chicken, salmon, and starch-based foods, plus 7-9 portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Serve good sardines on toast for his "oily" fish quota - you have those yummy Connétable tins from Douarnenez on your doorstep.
We've just gone from my hubby eating NO vegetables to now enjoying things like sugar snap peas and baby corn which are great because they don't need salt in the cooking either.
The consultant told him only 40% of cholesterol was due to diet, the other 60% is hereditary, so maybe check family history too.

Hello Judith
thank you for this, he actually loves tinned sardines so that's great. I'm a veggie so it will be nice to share more foods together, When I met him he didn't eat any veg except salad, now he will have broccoli, peas and carrots, sweetcorn, leeks and one or two others. His father has angina and his Grandad died of a heartattack. He actually doesn't have a bad diet as i try to limit him but as you say it's a hereditary problem. We only have the test results so far so it's off to the Docs with them to see what's next. He's only 43 so hopefully with some good changes we can get him sorted! The main thing is he's really 'up for it' so half the battle

plus 7-9 portions of fruit and vegetables per day. WOW thats a lot Yes, and expensive too! Five portions is "at least" and 7-9 is "ideal." It also says to have a "variety." I am taking this info from the consultant's papers on high blood pressure, but I guess it is the same for all cardio vascular problems. simson, glad to hear your man is really up for it, sometimes all it takes is a wake up call (like a test result or in James' case chest pains) for the patient to finally think about changing lifestyle! James was so shook up, he has even changed his job - I was rather hoping he might say back to France for the good life!
