I remember years ago (1970's) The two main employers were Axminster carpets and J H Shand who had a large works where Tesco is now. Shand closed years ago but you can still see the iron railings bordering the main road with JHS scrolled into it. Thursday is market day and back then the pubs were allowed to open all afternoon on market days and I spent many a happy Thursday afternoon in the local bars along with the early shift from the carpet factory. Happy days.
Axminster must indeed be depressed these days. I guess the main employers now must be Axminster power tools and Lyme Regis Engineering who re-located there some years ago and make Villager stoves

Everything that the UK produces now just seems so undercut, such a sad waste of talent too. Too right Ali - and often undercut by use of cheap foreign labour in the far east, asia and south america where there are very few or no workers rights legislation or unions - sadly this is exactly the same manner upon which the great British empire was built, when child labour, poor working conditions and low wages were the norm in the U.K. but we're all guilty of wanting cheaper TV's, cars and the latest gadgets at low prices
