Axminster carpets has been synonamous with Axminster for over 200 years. I lived and worked in that area for most of my adult life, many of my friends worked there, I used to drive them to work on the local buses and used to play skittles against them in the Axminster league.
Axminster Carpets were famous around the world and a very high quality product which lasted a lifetime. I know this will be a huge blow to the area where jobs are scarce and low paid. I am sad for all concerned.

Very sad news indeed, JohnP...... 'Axminster' was a byword for quality where carpets were concerned, and will be for many years to come I think. Nothing out there to replace them I don't think.

It's a sad day, when a firm that creates a quality product ceases to trade. Seems all the cheap and nastys survive; a sign of the times.

'Carpet City' was my largest local town, Kidderminster, it was full of carpet factories probably due to the wool from Wales and the river Stour that runs through. Famed for Brintons and Victoria carpets to name 2 brands. Plus Brockway, Grosvenor and Adams Carpets. Kidderminsters factories have mainly ceased trading now - a crying shame. If you're into carpets here's a BBC news link for Kidderminster: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hereford-worcester-19412857Whow - they're going to have a museum !!!

Yep another very sad day for British Industry as Ali notes Kidderminster went a few years ago which was also my local .................... however as much as we liken Axminster and Kidderminster names to high quality carpets surely they both would have survived had they had sufficient client base from which to supply carpets to i.e. us

I was back in Axminster at the weekend, it felt a very sad place. Shopkeepers, bar & restaurant owners etc were all doom and gloom. So far it looks like there is no buyer, and very few job prospects.

That seems a shame but think it is a sign of the times unfortunately

Everything that the UK produces now just seems so undercut, such a sad waste of talent too.
