I have withdrawn this post. Through my inability to get my point across it is causing some bad feeling and that is not what my posts are about. Sorry

What are you saying that only people who are born in the United Kingdom can be British? My father wasn't born in the UK but took British citizenship,he came to the UK as a sixteen year old, lived 60years in the UK which was longer then he did in his homeland and considered himself British.

I am a mongrel My mum took British citizenship after she married my dad and even back then there were questions to answer and her English had to be acceptable. She had dual nationality for many years but didn't renew her country of origin's passport. I am not sure where you are coming from on this one either, John. I absolutely love it here in France. I have two sons living in England and two grandsons and I am not worried about their growing up in the UK. I think there is good and bad whichever country you live in

I am also a mongrel. My mum was Italian and took British citizenship when she married my dad just after the war. However, when I applied for a job in the Civil Service in the late 60's I was turned down because my mother was not British by birth - how things have changed!

I have the impression that this thread is a Britain for the British, pretty good from someone who doesn't live there.

Don't think you have to live there to want the best for the land of your birth

I'm a mongrel too.
My dad is from Worcestershire, my mom from Shropshire.
I've lived in many places. I now live in France, who knows where I'll live next. My passport is British and my homeland will always be the 'UK'
However, I applaud the possibities of any country laying down criteria for one to become a citizen of that country. If it encourages incoming nationalities to understand a little of the culture of the country in which they choose to reside then hats off because, in my view, a little understanding could lead to more learning.

The majority of us "Brits" are decended from french, german and a whole load of other tribes that kicked the shite out of us at some point in history, so i suppose where your born doesnt realy matter in the scheme of things .We just use the flag as a fail safe when we need it most ie The 6 nations ,World cup ,Wimbledon etc or if your that way inclined getting locked up in a foriegn jail for rowdy behaviour. In the next few days i shall post from that great northern town of Newcastle upon Tyne will this make me the most patriotic most northerly post we've had on the forum or do i have to go to Greenland ?
