It isn't the mentally ill that we need to keep our eyes on RinkyDinky; it is the Psychopaths and they are not ill.

Apparently there are sites, selling back packs, which have bullet proof material in them; the idea being kids can use them to shield them selves, in the event of maniac gunmen attacking their schools.
Now ,I tend to think.....daft.....unnecessary....OTT. But if my child was in school in the USA, what would I do?

Living as I do in a veritable arsenal (including semi-autos), I have no fear of guns. Nevertheless in the hands of a loony they are dangerous - as are knives.
China had a school tragedy too. A nutter killed 22 kids with a knife.
The answer? Lock up the nutters. Sod "Care in the Community" for it clearly does not work. Everyone said that Lanza was 100% weirdo, he was having psychiatric assessments and yet he was still able to commit this atrocity because NOBODY was prepared to sanction locking him away lest it contravene his Human Rights or such garbage. Had he been sectioned this would never have happenned. His stupid mother should have had the commonsense to not have these weapons in the home when her son was clearly a disaster waiting to happen, one that she told a friend she was "afraid of" and whom she admitted was becoming more weird and distant from her.
Sorry but I don't see the guns as the problem - its invariably the idiotic lunatic pulling the trigger who is. In any case just banning them will not stop this because the country is already saturated with weapons, hidden in personal armouries, in grandad's attic or stuffed under the bed and then theres the fact that your local neighbourhood drug dealer or mafia member is not going to trot off to the police station to hand in his guns. Like hell he is!
The only thing that will make a difference is a change of culture. A ban will not make an iota of difference.

You will never change the gun culture in the USA to the point that there are no guns as the right to bear arms is buried deep in their culture. I do however believe that making semi automatic type weapons illegal for the average citizen might help over a period time to make some of the most lethal firearms less freely available.
I wholeheartedly agree that it is the treatment of mentally ill people that needs looking into urgently, as said there is too much emphasis put on human rights of such people and not enough on the human rights of ordinary people not to be gunned down by some headcase with a firearm who should never be on the streets.
There are many psychiatric conditions that can be treated safely within the community but certain mental illnesses make people totally unpredictable and dangerous and these should be in a secure unit where they cannot harm themselves or others.
