After reading an opinion poll about how people would vote in a referendum on EU membership,I would like to ask this question. If the UK pulled out of the european union, would you apply for French Citizenship?
My reply would be yes ,I think the consequences of the UK leaving would have an impact of making the British lower then 3rd class citizens and as I have lived here for over 20years I wouldn't want to return to the bad old days of applying for Carte de Sejours etc etc.

Interesting question. I really don't think it would change anything for British people already here. If you applied and got French citizenship, It wouldn't change who you are, you would still be British in the eyes of the French and I find on the whole I am treated well here and accepted for who I am.
With regard to the UK pulling out of the EU, I think that is highly unlikely, The government keep promising a referendom but they will only have one when they think they can get the result they want, just like the one that took us into the common market in the first place.
The only party who would hold an unbias vote I think would be UKIP and they don't have enough MP's to form a government, so unless things change dramatically I believe the UK is in Europe for the long haul. I was totally against us entering in the first place but I believe we are too far down the road to pull out, there is too much to lose now and there would be mammoth costs involved which the country clearly can't afford anytime soon.

I am really unsure how the UK public vote would really go. Understand from the Guardian that 56% of Britons would vote to leave the EU which only indicates, to me, that it is a fine balance. Would love to see the demographics on that poll. Do understand that in this particular one the conservatives were the highest % in favour of leaving. I think the EU has become pretty fragmented since 2004, too many smaller, and with all due respect to them, weaker countries have joined. If the UK did pull out I really do think the EU would be weakened. It would be a pain in the bum for us personally if the UK did leave. Restricted travel etc. However the oportunity for 'Duty Free' on the ferries would be great As far as French citizenship is concerned at this point I have no idea.
