I come back to my point that the main issue here is the immaturity of a grown man running away with a teenager whom he had a PROFESSIONAL DUTY OF CARE TO. Teachers are not allowed to have a personal relationship with their students until they are over 18 in order to protect the professional relationship. Parents need to trust us to act professionally when they entrust us with their children, teenagers, and young adults. The age gap is not the only issue in this case it is the abuse of power, the lack of communication, the distress caused to the staff and students who are trying to get on with their daily lives and the expose that this particular school seems to have a less than robust attitude to child protection issues. Personally I am not a lock him up and through away the key type person but I do believe that in a society where we all have rights we must also take responsibility for our actions. They need to return to the UK and accept responsibility for their actions.

Why? ? Because he seems to have been hung drawn and quartered before he has spoken! I tried to keep out of this discussion but I believe that in the UK one is innocent until proven guilty?

I thought it was illegal for a teacher to have any 'relationship' with someone they are teaching even if they are over 18, or at least a sackable offence.
It is the fact that he is her teacher that is the crux of all this. If he wasn't.... well there are thousands of relationships where s/he is 15 and the partner is 20+. Why on earth couldn't he have tied his wotsit up in a bow and waited until she was 16 and found another position at another school? Numpty!

I agree with the above post. All this could have been prevented if he had taken three simple steps 1. Tell his wife their marriage was over 2. Resign from his current post 3. Wait until the girl was of legal age

Totally agree with you bk1! And as far as I know, she could be 16 next week!

This is an interesting discussion. One thought crossed my mind. If the age of consent here is 15(I didn't know that) and she obviously is a willing participant in this, ie; has not been abducted, unless there is proof that they had sex in the UK before coming to France, has a crime actually been committed?
I don't condone what has happened and the Teacher has been a fool and obviously thrown away his future. By running away with him the girl is causing a great deal of stress and worry to her family and I am presuming she could contact them if she wished just to let them know she is ok.
I think there maybe more to this than meets the eye.

They need to return to the UK and accept responsibility for their actions. Interesting the use of the words they and their ,the "child " will take no responsibility what so ever, she will be considered as a victim not an accomplice in this case due to being 15 going on 20.

What I find a bit strange is that theer has been absolutely NO mention of his wife...no "she's staying with relatives" or "this is where he lived with his wife" etc etc....isn't that a bit odd?

I think that as the girl is under 16, was taken out of the country without the permission of her parents or legal guardians, and that the police and school were about to suspend him from his work following an investigation into his conduct, one could assume that he has committed an offence, regardless of whether the girl was a willing participant.
All teachers are in a position of trust, and it makes me squirm a bit to think of any teacher gazing upon a pupil with a lascivious eye.
Perhaps, if we have any sympathy to spare we ought to be lavishing that on his wife...can't help thinking that she's better off without him though.
