I am sick to death of the connection newspaper, central brittany journal etc etc. They try to pass off as there own, work articles which have already appeared in the french press with no accreditation to the original and an enormous amount of mistranslation which after you have read the original just beggers belief

It's pretty true LM.
I get Google alerts every day from the French press, also get connexion mails.
I think the Connexion and CBJ do have a valuable place over here for the non-French speakers.
I wonder where the mis-information from some forums comes from???

Think on the whole they are very good and the BCJ excellent value for 1euro.

I don't know enough about either publication to comment but if they don't translate the original coverage properly and don't give credit to where it came from then that must be misleading.

Unfortunately my French is not good enough to comment either but I do read the CBJ most months. As far as accuracy goes, can you rely on any newspaper for the truth these days? I always have a large bowl of salt next to any newspaper I read.

I think translating is extremely hard because one always wants to see things from one's own perspective and therefore chooses from one's own vocabulary which might not be technically correct. Tiny nuances can change the meaning dramatically. I sometimes find myself putting a different slant on people's work when translating, especially where opinions are concerned, although medical and scientific reports are much easier to keep to the original content.
I guess any information passed on to non French speakers has to be in some way beneficial. Even if it is inaccurate, it generates discussion and the next step is obviously to do one's own research on the subject. I do agree with others, we can't take any newspaper report as gospel these days.
