Surely under 18's will still be Mademoiselle, and from there on it will be a matter of choice. I can imagine some old spinsters fiercely defending their right to that title!

The German “Fraulein”, which literally means “little woman” was outlawed from official use back in 1972. In Spanish, a latin language like French, the use of “senorita” is now seen as old-fashioned.

It is difficult to know which word to use if you are not sure, but also a shame when these words die out.
