2 years ago, we had a load of common meeces, which I trapped over a period of 6 weeks and in that time, the size of each one was smaller and smaller, so we knew when we had wiped them out. However, we discovered something that is not common in the UK and is known in France as Loire [hope spellings right]. If you can invisage a large mouse, coloured beige but with racoon stripes on its face. The back legs are very big, not unlike a kangeroo rat and a longish tail, which ends with a ball of fluff, rather like a lion's tail. By all accounts, these little bergers are adept at finding cracks in walls of old buildings, excavating to make more room, then building nests. Whilst we found our little berger in an out building, when deplastering the house walls, we found countless little nests in the wall along with many hazelnut [empty] shells. I can say fairly confidently, that since we were adopted by a 6 year old french moggie, that all meece problems [he also hunts and eats rabbits] have ceased.

Trouble is WWS our dog wouldn't tolerate a cat on the premises. Googled le Loir and it is nocturnal ,quite rare and protected -comes under the species Les glirides.Found it very interesting-thanks for that.Have never seen one.
