Term has summed up kindle keyboard model pretty well, our two are the hi fi and 3g model. I do use mine very much as a audio book, ie I download podcasts and recorded radio programs to it. Use with headphones or its inbuilt speaker, or link to car radio.
Waited until today to really mention Kobo as wanted to confirm that their Kobo Vox was released. This is a tablet version bit like the Fire that Ali mentioned from amazon.
So check out the Kobo ereader. The web site is now kobo, used to be indigo books.
Theses ereaders are available from lots of places. In UK W H Smith. Best thing is that touch screen models are available now as well for europe.
France has had them for a while. Masses of books available.
FNAC are the official suppliers but are in other stores as well.
Can get them in pretty colours but I am not sure about the 'quilted' back design.
Seen one working and just like kindle.
ps funny notice people are using 'Kindle' now like we use 'Hoover' to describe a vacuum cleaner, become a generic name already. This

The 3G is of course the mobile phone network. Think of a contract for a sim that you do not pay for. I think, bear with me as I have just got back from a boozy dinner, my UK kindle has a vodafone sim installed. This gives me access to downloading books etc wherever I can get a 3G signal, pretty much most places in the world now. Amazon call it whispernet, surfing the web is possible for free, but the interface amazon has given for this is under 'experimental' in the kindle menu. It is usable but very fiddly. Email is of course an option via a 'kindle' email address. Your own email can be piggybacked onto this address. I always wonder if Amazon thought this through but live with it as a good answer for them currently, it is open to abuse. Certain documents that are sent to the 'kindle' email carry a small charge ie pdf attachments to discourage business use, can't remember all the details, would help is i was fully sober, but hope this explains a bit Ali. goodnight.

Just a bit of an update.
As you will know WHSmith is selling the Kobo reader which is a good alternative to the basic Kindle.
Released for sale now, through WHSmith shops and online is a colour tablet version. This is a competitor to the Kindle Fire and is available now. Beaten Amazon to the xmas market in uk.
Check it out looks really interesting and runs Android ........

I am thinking of getting my partner a Kindle.
I can order it to be delivered to Channel Islands as I go there every month. It will be used in France , but I could go back to CI to download some books as I understand that if its always downloaded in France they may change my account to international.
Or should I just order one in France, I am not bothered about the price difference, obviously in CI I would not pay VAT.
What are main pros and cons of either choice.
Thanks in advance.

After reading the full thread on here and Kindle forum, I have ordered one from France and added a few books. It seems we could have had problems later downloading books form UK . Amazon France has a special section for English books, and there was only one that I could not order.
You can download instruction manual in English, but luckily Mrs Sooty is very proficient in French anyway. unlike moi!

Sorry for no reply but v busy and only blimping in a bit.
The thread does contain all the relevant bits its only copyrights and various publishers agreements that are to blame for this situation, ie not all books are published in all markets not the online book sellers.
