Which one from the UK TT? I assume you mean the new £89 basic one. Just one thing to remember it does not come with a mains charger, only a USB to mini USB cable. This is intended to allow you to charge from a computers USB port. So you have to buy the mains charger if you do not want to charge solely from computer. Right having said all that, the mains charger for the UK is just a 3 pin plug with a USB port connection, this is the same as the Apple iPhone or the iPod; so if he has one of those he don't need the charger. Other bits of kit now use these adapters too. 12 volt cigar lighter chargers are available from lots of places with 2 or more USB ports on them so can charge in car.
Should be no problem downloading from french site, set country to France in the Kindle management, and the virtual keyboard can be set to french keys. How is he paying for his books, CC?
I have not personally tried to set one of ours to France but may try to does this on a UK internet address just to see what happens, but have downloaded books from my kindle archive (Cloud) to my iPhone in thailand last year so there seems to be less real trouble downloading than people report. Just need to know your settings.
You are aware from my previous post that the base kindle does not support audio and music, so this restricts it for me 'cos i like to collect podcasts from R4 to play another time, ie Plays etc, can either pipe them through the car radio or lay in bed in the dark with the headphones and not disturb herself.

Gosh, not only a techno wizzard, but a thoughtful husband as well! Got room for one like you here! Yes just the basic £89 one ... dad wont be doing anything fandangled with it - just reading books. He can get through a novel a day so it will suit him down to the ground. Thanks Lib you are a wonderful person TT x

TT in all of this screed every thing so far I have mentioned refers to having access to a pc and / or WiFi, if you wish to tell me what and how 'Dad' is going to use it and what kit or not he has access to I can give you chapter and verse. Please feel free to send me a pm with details if you prefer. Have not yet got to bits of download without WiFi but using 3G.

Thanks Lib ... dad has a pc and a livebox. Its in his lounge so I doubt it would be a problem to power the kindle via usb as its right next to him. His PC is very slow however but thats another story!
He is not very techno so I suspect he will be happy just being able to purchase books (and I have had a look on Amazon fr and there are 1000s of english books available on there by the looks of it). He will then sit and read them in his armchair, right next to the PC ! For him its not the portability of the book to read on the move, is the availability of an english book in France.
<<edited to move the 'what PC' question to the new thread>>

I have finally seen and used a latest kindle !!!
The first one I ever saw was A4 sized and frankly not something I would like so have never looked at them again. This one was book sized. The print was calming, not like the PC screen I'm on day in day out, it was quite restful with mega advantage that can change the print size to enable easier reading.
I practised using this new Kindle propped up on the settee and can frankly say I'm in love.
I think I've been kindled !!!!
