It was said on Newsnight last night that the largest number of immigrants currently coming into the UK was made up of Brits returning from living abroad. All of a sudden the home country doesn't seem as bad or are they just desperate?

I wonder ..........
- which countries the ex-pats are predominently returning from - if,now GBP is so low, less 'foreign' immigrants are arriving in the UK
We feel that the biggest influx of British ex-pats to France would have been from 2000 - 2005 although have absolutely no data to substantiate that - it's just a feeling.
Our business is taking back to the UK more retired people than people of working age and bringing into France a mix of young and retired and at the moment for the past few months it's been 50/50 France/UK.
Would be eager to hear more thoughts on this one!

can't understand why retired people are returning, after all the health care over here is second to none, unless they are worried about one of them being left alone in a foreign country. I must admit the exchange rate is terrible compared to when we arrived in 2001 and this may be a consideration when trying to exist on a small pension.

Was Newsnight basing this on Govt figures? Because Brown got a basting in this morning's broadsheets for using spurious figures.

I went to Carhaix-Plouguer today for the first time in over a year, and I was shocked at the number of empty shops on the main drag compared to how it was the first time I went to the town four years ago.
Four yeas ago when I bought my gaff, my village had three bars a butchers and a grocers shop, only the shop is still trading.
So yes I can see people thinking, “ this is not the Brittany I moved too” and selling up. I know a few who have moved on lately, but I don’t know of anybody moving over here.

I remember seeing a tv programme a while ago about '£10 poms' who had moved to Australia & quite a few wanted to move back to the UK to spend their last few years in the 'old' country.
So that may be the reason too...

Where retired people are concerned my guess is that not only has the financial situation hit them hard, but they really need family and friends on both an emotional and physical level in order to feel secure. Quiet, safe surroundings can't always make up for that homely feeling. When I look at immigrants to the UK I know (from India, from Africa etc.) the older generation lives within the "bosom" of the younger family so still feels needed and cared for, it works both ways. Most of these oldies hardly speak a word of English, hardly ever go into town, they just cook and clean and help with the children. But somehow they seem a lot more content than some of the whining retired ex pats I read about on French forums.
