Yesterday (all my troubles seemed so far away etc) I was driving back from town when I smelt that smell that an over hot engine produces. I looked at the temp gauge and it was right over too the right. I stopped and let it cool down with the intention of making it back home in leaps. On about the third ‘leap’ I noticed that the top of the rad was hot and the bottom was not, and the heater in the car was blowing cold. (No circulation) so I took the thermostat out. It still over heated on the forth leap. I stopped at a farm and scrounged some water and filled the rad up, the car then drove home at the correct temp over about 7 miles and a few gert big hills. The oil and water are clean so I don’t think it's the head gasket. Do you think I just let the water level get to low? I can’t remember the last time I checked it!

I'd bleed it out, refill with just water for now and see how it goes. Maybe check the water pump too. If after bleeding and refilling she's a goer (ooer missus!) then drain off a bit from the bottom and add yer summer coolant. Or if you procrastinate as I do,yer anti-freeze!......Donk

Certainly check water pump I had similar probs on my Westy years ago and was water pump knacked I don’t think it’s the pump Fli, cuz when I fill’d it up it ran at the normal temp. I fear it’s the head gasket, or if I’m lucky a pin prick in a hose etc. time will tell

I appear to have goten away with it, the car has just taken me into town and back, that’s about a 20 mile trip, and whilst it took a long time to warm up because I took the thermostat out, it did eventually get to working temp, and more importantly it stayed at it. Halliluya and praise the lord etc etc etc From now on I will check the levels weakly

Had a similar problem once - was just an air lock in the system - didn't even drain it but filled it while warm with engine running - end of problem.

I’ll pop the stat back in tomorrow, if it over heats again it’s the stat, but I don’t think it is, I just think I let the water level get too low. This is the problem with being in a trade, the cobblers child having no shoes etc!

Used to have a mini as my first car, twas always overheating. Had the head skimmed so many times that in the end it looked like woodworm and caved in lol Remember hot summer drives down the M5 into Gloucestershire with the car heater on hottest to try to dissipate some of the engine heat !! Used the whip the thermo out of that too......... memories.........
