Just stirring gravy when a thought popped up (not usual I know).
How about another little play with words..........
*One person asks for the true meaning/origin of a saying or expression (English or French)
*Peoples give an answer, OP (Original Poster) chooses right answer from the answers answered .......
*The OP gets to choose who asks the next one...........
So to start off:
Where did this come from, what does it really originally mean?
Saying: 'He runs rings around her'

Now means to outwit someone.Originally a hunting term, referring to the ring like running pattern that a fox used to try and outwit pursuing greyhounds....maybe?

"Bless you!" Its altogether more sinister than that I'm afraid.
Bouts of sneezing are signs of the Black Death - bubonic plague. When someone sneezed you said "Bless you" in the hope that it was'nt an indication of plague and certain death.
Likewise the nursery rhyme Ring-&-roses is also about bubonic plague. People carried a pocketfull of posies, firstly to mask the stench of town life at that time but the herbs in there also were supposed to fend off the plague nasties. But of course, once you had gotten around to "Atishoo atishoo.........." you did indeed fall down. Stone dead.
I am a mine of useless information!! ;D

Just had a look on Wikkipedia and they give an either or explanation, plague or Devil, theory. .Aren´t we lucky to live in an era where we don´t have to have smelly things held to our noses, well except when the fields are being sprayed, and don´t have to avoid nasty stuff being thrown from upstairs windows!!

Both right - though one must have come before the other. No idea which.
