For about 2 weeks I've been having problems receiving emails through Thunderbird!! I have been using Thunderbird for about 6 years now & never had problems before. The problem started after I had a horrible crackling noise on my phone line, which I originally thought was caused by the livebox ...... I took great pleasure in kicking it across the garden & has now become the dogs new play thing!! I bought a new Netgear Modem Router which I thought would solve all my problems anyhow it turned out there was actually a problem with my phone line, since then I cannot pick up any new emails without restarting my computer!! I have checked all my settings tried turning off the firewall & now don't know what to try next. The weird thing is somedays the email works fine but mostly it doesn't!! Please help cause restarting my computer all the time is a real pain in the bum!!

Sorry Sam, I don’t even know what ‘Thunderbird’ is, but put up a bit more detail about your operating system etc. I’m sure someone can come to the aide of a damsel in distress.

Sorry, I know bugger all about Thunderbird Sam. I've never even tried it.
To confirm your ISP or your router is not having a problem with POP/SMTP (the way emails are handled) why dont you try using a different emal client for a bit?

Sam - If you are using France Telecom/Wanadoo as your ISP, you might want to be aware that they have changed some of the port settings recently (so that you can't route non-native mail through their servers) - you can generally get around it by changing to alternative ports.
I'm using port 110 (the standard) for POP for most accounts but 995 for POP @ gmail.com (long, long story there!) and 587 for SMTP (standard is 25)
If it's specifically a Thunderbird problem, it could be that your mail files are too large (and when you delete mails it doesn't reduce the filesize) - you could try to purge the files by using an extension such as xPunge. Failing that, you could convert them to a different format and then reconvert them back.
It could be that your Thunderbird installation has gone corrupt?
If this is the case, you should backup your mails before you do anything drastic.
On a Windows system they'll probably be somewhere like c:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data\ Thunderbird and there will be one or more folders with names like... m5kxpos6.default
These need to be copied somewhere safe before you reinstall Thunderbird.
You need to be aware that there is a new version of Thunderbird out (3.0) - it's still in beta but it is stable and has auto-purging built in.
Hope this helps...
