Here's an odd one, I'm using XP Pro. IE 8 with addons has gone walkabout!! from the start menu the permanent shortcut comes up with the IE "options" menu system, from the menu you can only get IE without addons....... I know it's still there somewhere with addons 'cos if I do "iexplore" in "run" it opens correctly but a search for "iexplore "doesn't find it.................. weird ha?
Oh and if you try to enable the addons they're all there and enabled

Oh and if you try to enable the addons they're all there and enabled I wonder if it’s something to do with the update that Microsoft has been forced to send out giving you a choice of browsers. I downloaded it, but that’s the last I have seen of it. It was supposed to pop up the first time I opened IE8, but it didn’t .

could be, it's a fresh install of XP, so I might scrub it and start over before I get anything much that I need to save on the new machine

Many thanks for the thought LIF Your more then welcome, you’re the first to offer ‘good’ advice on many subjects, you would have got there yourself in the end. If you notice I had to do a rethink and edit my post to include system restore. Glad it worked
