We were stopped by UK customs Friday night, I had to prove car ownership (French reg) and French address, they also queried how long we had been in France and how long we intended to be in the UK, our passports were taken into the offices for what seemed quite a long time.
We have been stopped before but this time they seemed to be far more concerned with the car than it's contents.

Wouldn't be to concerned pandj I'm through there almost weekly and often the vehicle is their main interest. they often check the vehicle details and often send the vehicle through the scanner and set their lovely spaniel sniffer dog onto vehicle. Its a "jobs worth" exercise

Not so sure it is jobsworth. Friends of mine were pulled-in by gendarmes at the port (Caen) and their car details checked against their passport - the gendarmes already knew from their records that the people had moved house a couple of months ago and had not transferred the car registration to the new area prefecture. They were given 2 weeks to do so - or else!
Seems that there is a lot of car thieving going on at present and that is part of the extra scrutiny.
Hopefully the system will also catch out the Brits who live in France and don't change the registration to French within the 3 month period - about time the Gendarmes did something useful rather than just collect speeding fines!
