I believe that most people like to 'join in' on conversations but need some general shared interest that will tickle everyone's fancy. A good old controversial discussion tends to grab my interest. I guess that if all the 'usual suspects' reply to anything at all that newbies write then they will feel included.

The reason I haven't logged in here for ages is because some parts of the forum are only accessible to people when they log in. I don't quite understand why it isn't a totally open forum for people to read and then, if they want to post anything, they can log in. I suspect it's a hisorical thing re ex forum members and it's made me nervous about logging in in case I'm suspected of spying. GOGs is a totally open forum and I feel far more comfortable with that.

Hi Philippa Interesting and valid comments. I feel that there is a duty of care to be respected and the only boards that are not open to the casual passer by, for example, are boards containing date of births (the board called celebrations) and the reason for this is for security. 98% of our members do not wish for their date of birth to be in public view. The board containing the live chat box is not on public view as private and personal conversations between members including their children are held there. The other boards that are not open are related to the above or are a place where members choose to place posts often seeking advice where they feel it is safe to do so. Why would anyone not using the forum ever wish to read 'forum facts' ? 16 boards are open to view without logging in, only 5 are members only for the above reasons. Many of us belong to numerous forums covering numerous interests and each forum works differently. There is no standard format thankfully. I am also a member of GOGs and have been for the past 5 years or so and here is a link for anybody interested: Here is a link to GOGs www.grumpyoldgitsinfrance.com/GOGIF_old/search.php?search_id=active_topics&sid=6b31cbb9bf6588c6fce72b5acd4a76b3

Why should you be thought to be "spying",I don't understand, spying for whom?

Well said Admin
This is a friendly board, is well run and moderated,
There are a lot of people out there on the big wide world web that are just collecting info on us ordinary folk, so why not limit it to those you have registered and given some sort of proof as to who they are.

I don't know how long you've been on forums britchik. When Brittany Friends started there was a lot of animosity and I was singled out as a trouble maker for some reason. Since then there has been animosity between certain forums and I always worry in case anything I say on GOG's is passed on and misconstrued. That's why I never say anything negative about other forums.

Philippa - Ive never thought of myself being 007 but i can see the resemblance but to me you seem to have contradicted yourself to what you said on your original post. Just my thoughts - and I certainly wouldn't pass on anything anybody said onto the www let alone another forum.
