Just wondering what happens to all the new members who are welcomed to the site never to be heard of again??

A very valid question tinks. There could be a number of reasons and yes forums tend to have a larger inactive membership than active membership. Pondering on the question one theory of mine is that because this format is so different from AngloInfo, one way for example in that we have the live chat on all of the pages, as a guest people cannot see the chat box, therefore don't expect it when they join and log in, many people don't like to have to see it. It is much more of a personal format here and, for example, in the holiday trade there is a split between those that like hotels and can be anonymous and those that prefer B&Bs where it's more personal. Also I think it takes a bit of time for people to get settled and have the confidence to post or reply to a post. We are very careful here to protect our membership too. For example on 2 consecutive days this week we have had people join who's 'credentials' didn't stack up. Checks are made on all new members to ensure they are here for the right reasons. These 2 new members are known scammers from abroad, they have web sites which people buy from and never see the goods arrive. They also have the technical ability to 'harvest' email addresses and send SPAM (Hence the call for making sure our email addresses are hidden (profile/modify/hide email). We have around 200 plus guests looking in everyday and around 40 members signing in for a read. We are still a relatively small and young (1 year old) forum, 220 members is in reality quite a small base. It may be worth me dropping a line to the members who haven't posted even just to remind them that we are here. Does anyone have any ideas how we can involve our newcomers? When I joined this site I used to respond and post things but then one member was quite nasty and rude to me personally and to be honest, I thought "I don't need that from someone I don't know or ever likely to meet" so why put up with it when real life is often just as hard and needs to be dealt with. I did nothing or said nothing against him and in fact helped them with info on one occassion so it was uncalled for. Some people, myself included, are by nature quite trusting and try not to get upset at insults that are uneccessary but it does make you feel quite ill sometimes when you are down or vulnerable in other ways.

Fair comment Hellfire. Too many hide behind forum identitys and say things that may / would provoke a reaction that they never dare to expose themselves to in a real life situation.
I, personaly do not take offence easily, if at all; and do enjoy banter amongst people I feel I "know" enough to not warrant offence. It is still a finely drawn line though.
I always object to anyone casting aspersions about individuals posted on other forums even supposedly 'jokingly'

Hear hear lib and thank you hellfire for your reply - it's often easy to miss things.
We're doing our best to keep BWi a very good place to visit.
If ever anyone is upset about any post, on that upsetting post there are the words 'report to mod' underneath. Just click that - nobody else will know - just Admin or a Global mod - at least we can do something there and then.
Please keep the feedback coming in.

Well --as an active member of a number of forums --past and present-- all I can say from me is that if I have personally upset or offended anyone here on BWI-- just tell me ok-- I have been known for my mmmm OTT at times and sometimes my humour and mmm comments are very close to that line--and sometimes over it too--
I would love to have more of the people who just look in and read get more actively involved in the forum --- but everyone has their own life's and ways of doing stuff.
I personally love all the banter and double en-tenders that flow all over this forum-- it is one thing I really miss here in russia-- yes they have a good sense of humour etc-- but sometimes I wish they could talk in more than black and white---
And I for one can say from my heart-- that this forum is really great and a friendly place too XXXX

I suppose that I'm a reader and not much of a poster, better to say nothing then post on something you know nothing about.
