Maybe somebody who loves their granddaughter very much but is just being a little too naive.
Quite frankly wibble the grandparent would get more respect from me than somebody making comments such as yours.

I replied to this post - but definitely naive grandparents. Have just gone to look, AI have deleted my post which said only that my grandaughter used to fly to Brest, and for €30 was accompanied and delivered to me on production of ID - all arranged in advance who was picking her up. I also said that at age 11, i used to travel from school in Plymouth to Heathrow, get on a plane to NY, get on an other plane to Jamaica, all by myself. Perhaps she's old enough to travel by herself and it's not a good idea to advertise for an escort on a forum. DELETED - WHY? ?

Hi Wibble and pandj---
Well my daughter was travelling all over the world alone from age 8 years old--sometimes without us to come to join us or back to school-- but I was in the military at the time --and with forethought and a lot of work-- safe travel can be made--
Life is somewhat difficult at times and we all want the best way to do things for our kids etc-- do you actually know the exact circumstances as to this post??
Can feel for ya wibble --on first read-- you go boooom--
Natural reaction lol

I read that on and the gut reaction is to think it´s not such a good idea and why not go for escorted travel? On a different subject but same forum AI,I can´t believe the posts that are on there sometimes,I know that not everyone has a great command of spelling etc but some posts are dreadful,I have to put my hands in my pockets to stop posting about the spell check facility.

Talking of spelling someone was offering some Cuckoo De Rennes chickens for sale recently. ;D You'd think if you actually kept a breed of chicken you'd know how to bloomin' spell it!

The rules regarding child protection, (and 11 years old is still very much a child,) change all the time, CRB checks in particular, risk assessment etc., so I can understand the airlines not wanting to offer this service to minors. Where private arrangements are concerned, paper work still needs to be drawn up in order to cover both parties and to satisfy the authorities if necessary. What if the child has health issues (asthmatic, epileptic.), what if there are custody arrangements between feuding parents, what if the free for all seating arrangement means the child is separated from the carer, what if .............. I'm not sure I would want the responsibility.
On another subject, I have several times posted on AI to warn parents not to write "We live in Mûr de Bretagne and my son Johnny is 7 years old and attends such and such a school in eg. Pontivy ........" With those kind of details the child isn't immediately identifiable, but it wouldn't take much for something untoward to happen if a reader wanted to be sinister. Needless to say, I always get shot down for being over cautious or for scare mongering!!

AI is overpopulated with prats, but then LF has a coterie of them as well.
Brittany Ferries do not allow young people under 18 to travel alone - they hauled in my daughter because they thought she was a lot younger than her 19 years which did'nt please her at all! I would'nt dream of asking for a total stranger to collect my granddaughter though - when Liv comes here for her holidays I go over as a foot passenger to Pompey, collect her then we come back together on the ferry. Simples!!

Well of course, Mirabelle, going to collect the child is the most sensible and safest option. We have friends who do that regularly to accompany their grandchildren back and forth. Maybe the poster was trying to get the job done for nothing? Maybe I should have offered (CRB checked/teacher) at £25 an hour!

In that case Judith definately choose the Portsmouth to Saint-Malo overnight crossing, thats got to be 2 hours, + 8 hours, + 2 hours 'time' plus ferry crossing, expenses, subsistence ........ I wouldn't even send one of our dawgs on the ferry alone let alone a child tho. Is it more dangerous these days for children or do we just hear more through the media? ?
