I use Facebook to keep in contact with family in the UK & it's the perfect vehicle for keeping in touch with people.
However if you have any 13 year old female relatives beware.
Your news page will be full of snapshots of said relative & her friends & the comments that go with them which range from 'your gorgeous' (they seem to have given up teaching the difference between 'you're' & 'your' in English schools) to 'your gorgeous, love u lots xxx'.
Agree with Mrs M too about the data thing & that social networks are changing the world. Authoritarian governments can no longer keep their peoples under control through depriving them of information or mis-information. This is going to lead to a lot of upheaval in the world but ultimately I hope it'll be a good thing.

I agree it's a good way to keep in touch and to find friends from the distant past. I like to see how past pupils are doing, but would NEVER write anything for all to see. I use the send a personal message option. The danger is when 10 or 12 year olds are using facebook innocently or not so innocently. Things can get very out of hand. Does anyone know whether someone can tell if you are looking at his/her wall? I'd hate to be seen as a stalker. As far as I can tell Judith, the stalker check can only tell you if your 'friends' have looked at you wall and it shows up as only once. Unless someone has posted on your wall it won't show up. However, you can go on your friends site and look at their most often looked at person or site; and they yours. So, as far as I can ascertain, you can nose around to your hearts content providing you are not a 'friend' of the person or have posted anything on their site. I hope this make sense cos I am becoming confused myself.

I have had a few friends suggest I join facetwitter or whatever it is called. Call me a Luddite if you like but I cannot see the point - falls in the same category of Blackberrys so I can get my emails all the time - I dont want them!!! I look at my emails when I can concentrate whilst sat at my desk. I have a phone to talk to people and this will send Txt messages - enough for me!
Open question, why would I want the world to know what I am doing tonight for example, or what lovely photos I took on my holidays - all too much information for me!

Yes Meldrew tis too much information,I can´t understand these people who bare their souls on these sites, however my¨friends¨ on FB' keep me up to date without the need to call them,on occasion I can call one of them and know ¨stuff¨ before they do. I wouldn´t do it,but I love it that they do,does that make me sad?probably but what the heck!!!

It really is no different to using a forum, in that you can share stuff with other people, like articles in magazines/newspapers etc, you choose on Twitter or Facebook who you want to share information with. I have no interest in what you just ate unless it was a great recipe we might want to share.

Actually, we had our annual delight (no not that!) of eating Mont Dor cheese. Just open the little round wooden box and discard the lid, push slithers of fresh garlic into the top of the cheese and a splash of kirsch (or in my case grappa as we ran out of kirsch).
Pop into a hot oven for about 15 mins until the cheese melts and then serve, to be eaten with fresh baguette dipped into the molten cheese. Divine!!
Excellent for anyone on a low fat diet - Not!
