Returning to Normandy battlegrounds
VETERANS and their relatives are being offered the opportunity to visit the beaches and fields where the decisive campaign that ended the Second World War was fought.
Soldiers of the Worcestershire Regiment landed in France on June 6, 1944 and helped to secure the beachheads for Allied forces. They were also involved in the bitter fighting that followed the breakout from Normandy.
This summer, 67 years after the fateful D-Day landings, a historical research group is travelling to northern France to retrace the steps of the men who contributed so much to the final victory.
War Research Society organiser Alex Bulloch said: “Worcestershire soldiers played a crucial part in the liberation of Europe during the Second World War. Their heroic sacrifices and contribution to ultimate victory over Germany in 1945 cannot be over-estimated.
“The War Research Society is offering a unique opportunity for people to visit the graves of their loved ones. Unlike other organisations, we take visitors to the actual cemeteries where their relatives are buried.”
