Dear MM, last night I had problems accessing and posting on proboard sites for a while. Tried a little later all ok. All other sites were ok. Not got a clue why.

Of course I have no idea what you are on about, I just thought that you stuck the jack socket into the phone line Blu - 100% NO! You gotta use a filter, but I'd be amazed if u weren't already tho. I have now amassed 3 spare adsl filters (having bought 2 more today) and you are welcome to them. Any road erp, over here speed or tek isn't important, just a connection would be nice. Bought 2 new filters today and replaced the original ones - no diff/no net. Also was looking for new modem/router in case that was prob - went all the way back up to Carrefour hyper (coz they have a good range of PC stuff) only to find that they NO LONGER SELL wifi modem/routers, spoke to the chappie there and he said it was because the providers (Orange etc) are supplying them with contract and they no longer stock coz they dont sell enough of them! Visited Conforama, Intermarche Hyper, an independent PC shop (who said sorry we dont have stock will order for you) spent 3 hours again trying to sort an instant solution. Fli has picked up a new router from the UK (PC World) today, dunno what tiz but has 2 aerial sticky up thingys, and an hour ago the connexion came back up. If I find that its all been due to a FT man up a pole I will be wicked.

Mr Moorhen (aka the person in this household who understands these things) read this thread - I did ask him how he actually found the forum as I hadn't sent him a link to it - he said he googled British Women's Institute France or something similar..... ;D Anyway he reckons it's nowt to do with filters. He emailed Orange asking them to check the line etc and told them we didn't use a Livebox and they replied saying to check certain things on the ....... Livebox. Dunno but it's certainly bloody irritating!!! I hope I am allowed to swear!

So glad it's all working for you now Ali.. When we bought our new lappie we bit the bullet & finally got an orange livebox which we rent for 3 euros a month. So far it's worked fine, was very easy to install (even for a numpty like me!). However it does disconnect sometimes but windows troubleshoots the prob & failing that, that Helpdesk classic, turning it off & on again sorts it out!

V. interesting Ali and I'll tell Terminator to read this - maybe it is the modems after all. I think he usually buys them online anyway. Glad you are sorted and let us know if you have any more internet wobbles! You never know those men might have just come down from the poles for their lunch break.

Yo.
First, Ali, regarding your shiny new modem that works: on some modems you can force the modem to transmit at 5 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz. WiFi N will deliver up to 300 Mbit/s over 5 GHz, so long as the puter is in direct line of sight and close to the modem. I currently get 300 close to the transmitter on the first floor, and 270 Mbit/s on the ground floor. If your modem has an admin screen that allows you to change the broadcast frequency to 5 GHz, that could soup up your connection even further -- although your actual download speed is limited to the speed arriving at your house.
The further you are from the exchange, the slower the speed -- over 2 km from the exchange, there's a rapid drop-off. We're 2.795 km from the exchange, so the best speed I've ever seen is 5 Mbit/s, against a theoretical max of 6.5 Mbit/s for our 8 Mbit/s contract. You can see how far you are from the exchange by running the degrouptest analysis of broadband offers available to you (http://www.degrouptest.com/).
As for the earlier probs, what errors were you seeing on the modem? Flashing or no internet light, or flashing/no ADSL light? If it was the internet light going on & off, could be a problem at your ISP's end. If it was the ADSL light, then there's a prob with your line or your modem. There are various things you can try to remedy the probs, but you've gone & done it the expensive way...!
The prob was unlikely to be the filters -- they're solid-state and only carry the 24-volt current that comes down your phone line from the exchange (which explains why the phone still works -- unless it's a cordless -- when the power goes off). So unless you dropped it on the floor or had a lightning strike, it should work for yonks.
More likely a modem problem, unless there's damage to the physical phone line. We had an abraded line a couple of years ago outside in the street, which FT replaced free of charge. Does your line runs through trees? Anything touching the line can generate increased resistance, which can lead to slower speeds and dropped connections.
ADSL modems run hot, which I suspect hastens their early demise. I tend to raise modems a little off the surface they're sitting on to allow good air circulation. Let's hope the Belkin modem lasts longer than the previous one. I'm off to cdiscount.com if our problems persist!

This all makes my head hurt! All I know is that it always packs-up when OH wants to use it - cue lots of ranting, clicking furiously on the mouse, accompanied by plenty of anglo-saxon words that ze french do not comprehend. In three months we have had our internet & phone severed three times. Once was some numpty who chopped through the lines with a chainsaw - offline two weeks. Second time an even bigger idiot drove an overloaded tall truck down our lane then tore out all the wires - another two weeks - then next time some other fool sawed through the cables somewhere betrween here & the exchange wiping out the entire neighbourhood for miles for two weeks. Mind you, they did manage January without cutting us off...........................

Mirabelle, our phone line runs through 2 farms and through a wood, so as you can imagine it get's chooped quite frequently. So what we do is take a photo of the damage and print it off, print off a google earth map showing exactly where the problem is and take both into our local Orange shop (Pontivy). It's normally sorted the same or following day.
