I have started to get a message on my Dell Inspiron that the battery is reaching the end of its usable life. My main question is will the laptop be usable plugged into the mains when the battery is caput! ? I have looked online but no one ever gives a straight answer. Please can you advise me

Yes, should be ok when plugged in, mine always have been.
Why not do an Internet search for a replacement battery for the lappy?

Ok so I removed the battery and booted up laptop...and it works so that is good news...phew. Hard to believe that the old Toshiba which has a fairly rubbish battery does still have some life in it, or perhaps Dell just like giving their users the jitters. That will teach me to watch in bed, strictly come bloomin dancing running on battery power on my laptop, it has exhausted itself!

Laptop batteries last a lot longer if you DO use them.
Try not to have it plugged in the mains all the time but instead let it run all the way down at least once a week if you can.
Just unplug it and use as normal until it finally says it will shut down if you dont plug it in.
At that point, plug in and continue using...
This will keep the batteries as healthy as possible but do remember that batteries wear out over time so will always have to replace them sooner of later.
Ebay is a good source for (much) cheaper replacements although you do (as they say) get what you are paying for.

BB - would that last comment also apply to rechargeable batteries in general, for example cameras or video cameras? (I've seen batteries for my camera at less than half the price of Nikon branded...)

Your Nikon also uses lithium-ion batteries (the same as most modern lappies) and so the same applies Stavros.
It is a lot harder to run them down on modern Nikon's because they last so blooming long.

Thanks for the comments, but I have been letting the battery run down my brother advised me to do this too.
Dell dont even list the same battery that is in this machine.
They list two 1 @ £120 + another at £60 +..........but neither is the same power as the one I have...
.computers we love em and hate em!
