Look out for new highway code rules
CYCLISTS and pedestrians have been given new rights over cars in a series of changes to the highway code in France.
The rules, which take immediate effect, mean pedestrians now always have priority over cars when crossing a road. Until now, they had priority only at specially designated crossings.
They need to "show a clear intention to cross" a road - described as "an ostensible step forward or a hand gesture" - and vehicles are required to stop for them.
The only exception is where a designated pedestrian crossing is less than 50m away.
Drivers who ignore the rules face a fine of €135 or could lose four points from their licence.
The new rules also allow bicycles to skip red lights if they are turning right, but only at crossroads where there is a sign to that effect.
It will be up to individual mayors to decide where this should be allowed.
Also introduced in the code change is up to seven hours of obligatory training for scooter-owners who hold a Permis B driving licence, unless they have been using it for at least the past five years.
This last measure comes into force in January and will be accompanied by increased spot checks and on-the-spot fines of €135 for anyone who makes changes to their scooter's speed limiter.

Got the impression that pedestrians think they have priority now, they seem to blindly bumble their way across the road without a care;and why are an awful lot of crossings just around a corner or just as you go off a roundabout,it amazes me that the majority of French make it past puberty

Stumbling straight out in front of the car, we had to slam on the brakes. And when we hooted at him, he jumped 3 feet in the air with his old 'roll up' flying off his bottom lip!

As a pedestrian and not a driver I would like to stand up for pedestrians vs. rotten car drivers. Do you know how long you need to stand at a zebra crossing in France before anyone stops for you?
FOREVER!!! They rotten sods just will not stop unless you take you life into your own hands and step out onto the crossing, amidst much squealing of brakes and filthy looks.
Good for the pedestrians!!!

French drivers aren't greatly into giving way in any shape or form, you could quietly die before they'll let you out into a queue, mind you I think women are more considerate in this way unless you're young and beautiful in which case men will let you out!!

Goodness you are halfway between where I live and Fougeres! Didn't know there were many of us around here. Anyone who lives half an hour from me is close, compared to everyone who lives 'up the other end', who are all tripping over each other!

Thanks for that Ali, I already try to stop if I do not have a car on my tail, trouble is around here pedestrians are often in a huddle having a chat, my visibility is obscured due to the parked cars allowed right up to the crossing ..........so If I can see them I do not have an IGLOO if they want to cross or not!
