Britain: you’re on your own, warns France
France says Britain can't expect to be bailed out
Britain may find itself on its own if it comes under pressure from the markets, France’s chief financial regulator has warned, after London refused to join Europe’s trillion-dollar rescue package. Britain is not part of the Eurozone single currency bloc and refused to help pay for the €750 billion package put together this week by its European Union partners to shore up the zone’s debt-ridden economies. ‘The British will certainly find themselves targeted, given the political difficulties they have,’ said Jean-Pierre Jouyet, head of France’s AMF market regulator, as British political parties struggled in London to negotiate a coalition. Speaking on Europe 1 radio, the official said that by standing outside the European rescue package, Britain had left itself alone to face a possible onslaught by currency traders on the pound. ‘If you don’t want to show solidarity with the Eurozone, wait and see what happens outside it,’ said Jouyet. He warned that there was now what he sees as a ‘three-speed Europe’ comprising ‘the Europe of the euro, the Europe of those countries that understand the euro such as Sweden and Poland, and the British.’

Read the article carefully - "as British political parties struggled in London to negotiate a coalition"
Jouyet's comments were made just after the General Election, and before Cameron and Clegg had agreed their coalition. Britain's position has improved since then, as France's economy has slid below Christine Lagarde's rather optimistic forecasts. Wait and see when Q3 figures are published for the two economies, particularly in view of Sarko's recent problems with strikes and demonstrations.
Sarkozy has been trying to create a Franco-German bloc inside the Eurozone, but it looks as if Angela Merkel is playing a cautious hand, not prepared to enter into any cosy little bilateral deals that are designed to get Sarko out of the hole he has dug for himself.

Just say that the UK decides to pull out of the EC … would we lose the right of residency here? In fact would we lose the right of ownership ?

Just say that the UK decides to pull out of the EC … would we lose the right of residency here? In fact would we lose the right of ownership ? Couldn't be done (ownership...) If it happened - and it's extremely improbable - we would probably revert to the 'carte de séjour' system, and have the same régime as all other non EU residents. It would make an immediate difference to the health-care and social service regime for all those who hadn't acquired rights by working here, but those who have the requisite number of years of French Social Security contributions would find life virtually unchanged. But as said, it is not impossible, but totally improbable. There is more chance of Belgium splitting into two countries... (and read 'La Libre Belgique' and 'Le Soir' on that subject.)

I hope your right Stav, but given the right to vote on it, the great British public would vote for out of it.
Hence why they will never get the chance to vote on it.

All the EU Funding is just taxes paid being distributed, littlemouse. Not been to resurface my track yet.

All the EU Funding is just taxes paid being distributed, littlemouse. Not been to resurface my track yet. It's like the signs they put up by major road projects, "Ici, l'Etat investi pour Votre Avenir" (here, the state is investing for your future) No they ain't, they're spending the money they've taken from us...
