Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney Pie, with a mountain of home-grown runners, and bread, no potatoes...
There's a whole lot of history to Fray Bentos - I grew up with the brand - an every-day source of nutrition, not all bad, which we kids were fed, but not father....

"Produced in Poland using cod caught in the NE Atlantic - Barents Sea or Norwegian Sea using trawls or hooks and lines" are the cod fillets that I'm cooking tonight, as reliably informed by Mr Tesco, who, much as I despise him, I can't knock about the amount of information he provides.....
Thoughts turned to the people who actually make these cod fillets happen - "For those in peril on the sea", and for the fish processors in Poland, gutting chilled fish all day long...
It made me want to say Grace - who amongst us says Grace these days before we eat?
There's more to this thread "What are you cooking for tea tonight" than filling our bellies. It makes you think, it makes you want to give thanks.

Ha! I read in the papers that Mr Tesco admits that not all of his fish is line-caught, and that some of the netting methods used indiscriminate, and that the unwanted species are thrown back, dead....
Mr Tesco, you're full of sh*t. Not that I'm an eco-warrior, wringing my hands about the licky, icky unwanted species, but that you con me into believing that the licky icky unwanted species are protected by your methods, so that I'll buy your offering...
Tonight I'm going vegetarian, and none of it is sourced from Mr. Tesco. It's not that vegetarian in some way helps me to save the planet, and so feel pumped up and self-righteous about my dinner, but because I've got lots of home-grown and enough imagination to know what to do with it, without concerning myself with unwanted species, licky wicky animals and 'saving the planet'......

...and why.
I'm cooking chicken & chick pea curry, in the slow-cooker. Why? Because I keep receiving presents, from family and friends, who, knowing that there's nothing that I want/need or value give me all sorts of food products, presumably on the grounds that everyone wants/needs/values food....
So it is that I've got a sack of dried chickpeas to work through, and tubs of Thai curry paste enough to Feed the World...
Not wishing to waste anything, or to appear ungrateful, I'm using them up, slowly....
ps: I'll be adding to the Thai curry paste Garlic and Ginger paste, intended for Indian cuisine, but of which I've got so much I don't know what to do with it, but at least I won't waste it, even if in some slight way my cooking is a hotch-potch. Cooking a hotch-potch is just another advantage of being a bachelor - there's no-one to complain.....
pps: I've thought about using up all my food excesses by feeding Jake my dog curries every day. I'm certain that he'd eat them. But the thought of him spraying his poo everywhere afterwards has put me off...
ppps: I'm off now to go and do something useful outside with plants, soil, blustery winds and Shock & Awe. Bye!
