Britain's top cop, the Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, has spoken out against police bonuses. In an article in today's on-line Telegraph he says bonuses should be scrapped because "they can distort policing priorities" www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7734719/Met-chief-Sir-Paul-Stephenson-scrap-police-bonuses.htmlThe sums involved are eye-watering: rank & file coppers trouser some £37 million annually, (that's right, £37 000 000.00) for such things as "going to a road accident" - £100, or better yet "up to £300 for unpleasant or disturbing incidents". Does this mean they're paid a very good wage for turning up at the cop-shop, then bonuses if they actually do anything? I'm sure our armed forces, fighting & dying in places like Afghanistan, will be delighted to learn how well we look after some, but not others. How about £5 every time Private smith cleans his rifle? Or £20 for loading it? (danger money - loaded arms can kill!) Or £100 for going on patrol in Taliban territory? They've all put on the Queen's uniform, sworn the oath, and they knew what the job was before they signed on. These police bonuses are, frankly, obscene!

Very good point Stavvy--- But I for one would not like to go and visit the families of dead and injured solders from Afghanistan and say to them -- we was not happy to give all this money to the police for doing their jobs!!! so here's a pony for ya cos your son went on patrol and did not come back!!

Didn't mean that at all, P. My point is that signing up, armed forces or police, you know you are potentially at risk, this is part of the job. The salary should reflect this. Why should police have bonuses for doing what is a part of their job, and the military just get a pat on the back and the occasional tin medal? The last 13 years of NuLab have seen the rise of a sort of bonus culture whereby public employees of all kinds have come to believe that the salary is theirs of right, just for turning up in the morning, and if they actually do the job they are paid for they should get special payments on top! Doing a job, and doing it well, can and should be part of employee assessment for promotions to higher grades, hence higher pay. What next? Bonuses for leaving the canteen to go on street patrol?
