No other country could make everyone incl foreigners go out and buy these things til there were none left on the shelves then do a final U turn. Must have been due to all of the multiple copies they had to make of the documents and inside leg measurements.
Am sure there was some talk of Sarkozy being a share-holder with one of these maufacturers at some point, well it wouldn't be suprising would it.
So now what do we do with them - boil in the bag fish?

This is a recurring item, sometimes politically driven other times as road safety measure. Seen many attempts to prevent drink driving during my time in the motor trade. Trying to remember when citroen / peugeot proposed a 'test' with an ignition keypad, you had to punch in four numbers on the pad (the numbers were randomly generated and shown on the dashboard) within a set time. After 3 wrong attempts the car ignition locked out. Never came into law but the pad without random numbers was used as an early 'keylesss' ignition.
Lots of 'sniffer' ignition systems proposed in the USA over the years. One even measured alcohol level through trans dermal transference sensed by pads on the steering wheel, 1980's i think. Lots with built in blow in bag before the car will start. Don't know of any states who have a law in place yet.

I worried about this test thing and asked my other half repeatedly to buy one he kept telling me not to worry as long as they were "out of stock" the law could not be applied................ Also his whole family pointed out it was a stupid law and likely to be withdrawn lol I wonder if the production problems were only for france..........

Well locally the requirements for drink driving seem to be the capability to get to your car, remain vertical long enough to extract your keys from your pocket and find the ignition, If you can manage all three, you have passed

I had a Citroen CS Turbo with one of those dashboard keypads - bloody good idea in the UK before the more sophisticated modern electronic keys were available.
Now with my Vel Satis i just walk up to the car with the electronic key in my pocket and the doors unlock, same when I leave the car and walk about 10 feet away it locks - being my normal pessimistic self, I am expecting the bloody thing to either lock me out or in at any time in the future!!
Just read in the new Connexion that in any case with the obligatory breathalysers they have not been tested against the electronic gendarmerie meters. Therefore you could pass the test with your 1 euro thingy and fail the gendarmes meter - whats the point of them anyway? Basically my thoughts are that if you even think you may not be OK to drive then you probably are not!

being my normal pessimistic self, I am expecting the bloody thing to either lock me out or in at any time in the future!! same here .... there's also no handbrake on the Tiguan, it's electronic (or summIC) so one day if the battery goes flat.......
