When I was back in Ireland I stocked up on Hafners Dublin sausages , Clonaklity black pudding, soda bread and potato bread, if i was to make little nibbly portions with quails eggs I was thinking it would amuse them to have tasted a good old Irish "fry" ? Ali you are great with the ideas, definitely going to use some of those ideas. PS The cheats pastry is very convenient but it has a completely different taste to what I am used to. I make goats cheese and oignons conft palmyres withe the feuilette variety and they seem to be popular with the family. I also tried it with jalapeno relish and goats cheese

Easy to do hot apperro. thin slice baguette with what ever cheese you have melted in oven as above with portrine de porc fumé wrapped round it stoned prunes wrapped in portrine de porc, cooked in oven
Aperro cakes which I have yet to try make with surimi, or vegi with courgette and goats cheese.
Or using cheats pastry slice chorizo into small pieces dot all over pastry, sprinkle emental over top, top with another piece of cheats pastry, "puff" is best for this. cut into 1cm/1/2" strips, cut to about 10-15cm long, press end together well and gently twist. Cook in oven at 200°C till pastry is cooked. Every one goes mad for them. You can do the same with cut up air dried ham, or smoked salmon. You can make them the day before.
Dessert is tricky. It depends as you could have no one after 8-8.30pm as they have left to eat at home, or they could stay. If they stay you are in a tricky position of offering a light meal and dessert which they may not want. All depends on how well you know them. Maybe have the expensive ice cream desserts in freezer just incase. A back up some thing you could throw together in a hurry, plater of cheese, etc. This is tricky for french too........

Cheers Em, that all seems easy to manage and I can get ahead with some a day in advance. I know the guests in a work context but not in a social context. Some will stay longer than others I imagine . I make a mean mint chocolate cheesecake , and have a few batches of mini mince pies and ice cream in the freezer. I think I will offer it and see if anyone is game to try them.
