Dill (the herb) - what other herbs?

Thank you to Mad M for giving me a Dill plant last year. I'd never grown Dill before and had suddenly realised that it's unimaginable not to use it with fish.

So this year I've used some seeds from last years Dill plant and now have 12

We have 'Poor Breton Fishermans Pie' tonight so I wandered down t'garden and brought up some fresh Dill. The perfume is wonderful.

I have thyme, parsley, corriander, dill (of course), chives, mint and a few other herbs and am interested in what everyone else grows and uses and where to use them?

That's funny you should say ....... I just bought a tiny bag of dill today from Sainsburys to put in a fromage frais sauce with salmon tonight. I think it was around £1.00 and came from Kenya!

I remember years ago trying to encourage you to grow some tomato plants that I'd brought round.

2012 challenge for you - if I send some seeds in the post and you get a pot, put some compost in, would you like to try your hand at Dill ??

Flippin herbs here are approx 1.60E per piddly bit!!! and even then they shortchange you on the weight. Have thyme...2 varieties,rosemary ,mint, chives ,parsley ,sage..2 varieties, basil, and coriander which is still struggling!! Oh and plenty of weed...sorry forgot it isn´t a herb.

My dill and coriander self seed so I am never without. *smug grin*

I also use dill for Greek cos lettuce salad. Take nicely hearted cos leaves, slice them across the middle ribbed bit really finely, slice up spring onions and add chopped dill, then dress with olive oil, salt and pepper and wait for it.... malt vinegar.

It's my favourite salad in the whole world and I can't get enough of it, but don't have it that much cos as soon as it gets really hot my cos tends to bolt!

Have to say though, I am very, very bad because every year I mean to dry my own herbs like thyme and oregano and never get around to doing it. (so I buy them dried )

How's the basil doing, Ali? I have way too many and they all need chopping back as they've got too big. If you want any more you know where I am!

My bro' may be coming over soon (waiting for his passport to come back) so perhaps you'd like to come over when he is here?

As for the blackberries. Girl you are dead. ;D I am going to have SOOOOOOO many of the damn things, and that's just from the two plants that got ahead last year. Then there's the other 3 which are a season behind.

Talking of herbs--trying to grow Tarragon from cuttings--I have searched locally for it and seems strange not to find it--so here goes,I love it with chicken !! yum.

If this is any help Eryri, Tarragon is Estragon here. Its a perennial and can be bought as a young plant from any garden centre, some Bricos and have even seen it in supermarkets at times rooted, in pots, in the veggie area.

I bought 1 plant in a pot about 3 years ago, I've kept it potted and looked after in by sheltering it in winter and still have it now.

Used to use it a lot with fish until I rediscovered Dill But the great thing about it is that its still around when the Dill isn't.

How about growing it from seed?

Do herbs freeze? I end up throwing away half the packet because they go all mushy. There must be a way to keep them?
You're right, Ali, I wasn't very green fingered in France, now even less so in London. Must try harder!

We have Lemon Balm,which is good with fish and poultry,makes a herbal tea,and can be used in jam making,sauces etc.Also has medicinal uses.Bees are attracted to it.

I have rosmary, mint, got garlic chive, basil and oregano seedlings not seen a sign of the thyme seedlings but.........
If all the seedlings come to fruit I will have too many will need to kill or pot on some for some one else.....?
