The whole sell- by date thing is a joke really. Nothing can beat giving something a sniff, ie if it smells off then chuck it, but the obsession with this is beyond a joke now, hence people raiding the bins outside supermarkets for their suppers. How does stuff become instantaneously Off within a microsecond of the date expiring?? I don't chuck anything in the bin food wise. The dogs have meaty stuff & everything else goes in the piggy bucket - I am very Green! Speaking of green, I noticed a couscous salad in the supermarche yesterday with what I initially thought was a sprinkle of chives on top. In fact it was green mould (some new probiotic perhaps? ), but the sell-by date on it was middle of next week. So then, do I eat something within the sell-by date with green mould on it or something that looks & smells perfectly fine that outside the date? Decisions decisions.................. The first couple of sentences sound like a friday night in Newcastle Mirabelle

Getting back on topic Spices and herbs are usually a good one to explore,I wouldn´t like to confess how old some of mine have been when thrown-well used actually, lol no no no...... herbs and spices may not "go off" but with time they certainly lose their flavour..... with herself being vegi we tend to use a lot and you can SOOOOOOo tell the difference between a freshly opened pack and one that's been open for a while, even if it's been in a sealed jar in the fridge.
