There are lots of young country artistes who have moved away from the more traditional 'Slim Whitman, my dawg is dead an' gone' genre of music, Taylor Swift for one, even though I'm not a fan of her 'modern instant pop' to which she seems to have turned. Like everything else, Country music has now splintered into many differing styles and to lump it all in with a record that was a hit in 1952 is a tad biased. (Though I admit playing that would have me running for the hills).

Don't you think that music is so pigeon holed that you dismiss certain areas just because of the box its been placed in.My parents liked musicals so there were one or two discs in the house, as a child /teenager I couldn't stand them. But on reflection that wasn't really true, there were one or two songs that were catchy and actually quite good but playing the whole disc was mind numbing. My main preference was and still is rock music, floyd ,springsteen, genesis, you get the gist, these were / are the music artists that I would spend money on.But that doesn't stop me liking Robbie Willaims singing Mr bojangles it just means I wouldn't buy an album for one song.

Seems to me much of the problem with current popular music can be laid firmly at the door of Simon Cowell and the rash of "talent" shows that are foisted upon us all. Dave Grohl, one time drummer with Nirvana and now front man of the Foo Fighters sums it up pretty succinctly “When I think about kids watching a TV show like American Idol or The Voice, then they think, ‘Oh, OK, that’s how you become a musician, you stand in line for eight fucking hours with 800 people at a convention center and… then you sing your heart out for someone and then they tell you it’s not fuckin’ good enough.’ Can you imagine?” he implores. “It’s destroying the next generation of musicians! Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy and old fucking drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll fucking start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they’ll become Nirvana. Because that’s exactly what happened with Nirvana. Just a bunch of guys that had some shitty old instruments and they got together and started playing some noisy-ass poo, and they became the biggest band in the world. That can happen again! You don’t need a fucking computer or the internet or The Voice or American Idol.”

Oh dear, I do hope this isn't going to degenerate into everything that is awful........There is so much wonderful music out there!

Not at all John - just trying to say that when we wax lyrical about the great music of our past, we tend only to remember the good and forget that it wasn't all so. This is to redress the balance - one of my favourites

Bart...I wish there was facility to give you more than one 'like' for that post. I have a lot of time for Dave Grohl, more so since reading that. He's so right.....

Just to refer to a posting I made a couple of weeks ago in "Song for today"
I just heard that saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft has died at his home in Exeter. Made famous by his wonderful saxophone solo in Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street, he worked with many groups and performers over a long career. I personally will always remember him for his sax solo in Hazel O'Connor's hit single Will You and I would like to make that song for today. The world has lost a brilliant musician.

Think the original question was if there are any talented singers/muscians about today. One could go on forever about what was good /bad in the past.
