How about trying this ........... dampen some 'kitchen towel' with water and put beans on top in warm bright place, keep damp but not soaked. They sprout faster and you can tell which ones are going to sprout and which ones not ............. and/or put some compost in cardboard loo roll middles - pop a bean seed in each, damp it, and keep in warm place til they're up. The latter way means that hopefully the beans will develop a good root system before the meeeeces eat the seed.....
Love dwarf french beans - just 5 plants are good enough for 2 peeps.

The old duffer who lives next door, Mr Pastry, and who's just got back from France, where he also practises gardening, (who, in their right mind would travel abroad to do that? ), is pleased that Ali's tip to pre-germinate the seed was successful, and 'hopes that the gentleman will put the seeds in the ground forthwith, if not sooner' before we run out of growing season, and that 'the beans should be taken at 7" long, not 6", and certainly not 8"... It beggars belief that some people have such an interest in this subject... ps: Apparently - don't ask me why - it's possible to freeze runner beans if you blanch them first.

Good morning Anon,"It beggars belief that some people have such an interest in this subject..."
Size is very important to us male keen gardeners lol.Maybe i'm doing something wrong,so could you do me a favour please, could you muster up enough interest to ask the old Duffer, how he blanches his beans. They are such a wonderful interesting plant,it should be made obligatory by law for everyone to have them in their gardens.thanks, hope it stays dry as i'm now off to dust my bean leaves.! !
