I read a very informed blog (via the BBC website) by an experienced airline pilot. He thinks the plane ran into trouble (possibly a nose wheel fire due to under inflation) just after the last message was received. The pilots would have pulled all the fuses in case it was an electrical fire (hence the lack of communication) and turned back towards the nearest suitable airport. This fits in with the tracking. However, it's entirely possible that the crew and passengers were overcome by fumes and the plane carried on using automatic pilot until running out of fuel. This isn't in the direction that the lastest possible debris has been spotted. He may well be wrong but it was a persuasive theory. Had a go on the Tomnod site, and did 200 squares but spotted nothing. That theory sounds very plausible to me Sonic,there seems to have been a lot of grasping at outrageous ideas.

Apparently (and rather worryingly) underinflated nose wheels do catch fire or rather overheat and smolder. The blog writer was aware of how experienced the pilot was and that the nearest airport with a long enough runway and a safe approach was in the direction the plane turned. I do rather fear that they are now looking in the wrong area and that we may never find what's left of the plane.

JBC was in the RAF and then the aviation industry, so the knocking down of the various theories has been happening a lot here. The one you are talking about Sonic,seems to be the sainest.
