Appointment at the vet this morning for my young Border Collie Jacques to have his annual vaccination. He didn't think much of that but then I asked the vet to clip his dew claws which is very difficult to do on your own. Jacques however had other ideas and it took myself, the receptionist qnd the vet to try and hold him still enough to clip the claw. After clipping one he put up such a struggle, we had to give up as in the ensuing battle he managed to put a two inch gash in my arm with his claw which bled profusely and I ended up needing a bandage.
Jacques is home now and quite happy as if nothing has happened, I am on anticoagulant medication and applying my third bandage for the bleeding which has just about stopped two hours later. I dread having to take him for anything serious.

Ooh... that sounds nasty JohnP, did you put any antiseptic on it? Do hope it heals quickly for you! . A big cuddle to your little dog too for being so brave!

Tilly's claws grow like crazy, I do chop them but very gingerly as they are black and it's impossible to see where the "quick" is. Has anybody else's dog got the same and how do you judge how low to chop?

It is very difficult to judge with black claws, little and often I used to do with my lurcher. Problem with my two is keeping them still so you can get an accurate cut. Jacques is just impossible to keep still as he demonstrated at the vet the other day but if you have a dog who will let you clip them without a struggle that is the battle won!

My Toto (a Breton Spaniel/Setter) has much the same problem and I always err on the side of caution. Luckily he is very compliant and doesn't mind too much.....by the way, cutting a guinea pigs claws is a lot more difficult....

Tilly isn't keen, whereas Toby would suffer any grooming indignities for a treat and a stroke, totally different personalities for the same breed.

Like Lk said JohnP you do have a lovely way with words. My Oh sister has 4 Border collies and all of them are quiet happy to sit there for the nails to be done but they do get a treat afterwards. How old is your Jacques?
