Approx 18 months ago ,we had a visitor in the space between the bedroom ceiling and the roof slates. It came home just before dawn and thundered around overhead, before eventually settling down for it's daytime sleep. We assumed it was a stone martin but as it was never seen we couldn't be certain. JBC got rid of it by waiting till it was on it's night time excursions, and then blocking every possible way in.We heard it a couple of times, frantically trying to get back to it's warm nest, but since then nothing...............................untill two nights ago!! The damn thing, or it's best friend ,has reappeared. It spent the last couple of nights, well mornings really, thundering around and attacking the insulation. It would seem the same measures are needed, hole filling at an unearthly hour. This is most definately one of the benefits of having a live-in man. I shall be tucked up in a warm bed while the Beast is made homeless.

we have one too he is a red squirrel - the first year he made a bit of noise for a few days then slept all winter - we heard hinm get up amnd leave in spring. since then he comes back in autumn and we only her him once - i presume he settles down in the previously made nest. - i'm happy for him to bee there as he no longer scratches around for nights on end.

Lucky you!'Our'red squirrel appeared at the bird table 2 days ago-think all this wind and rain had disturbed it.Put some walnuts and chestnuts out for it so fingers crossed it eats them.

The beast hasn't been heard for the last two nights.Has he gone? Are we being lulled into a false sense of security?

He's gone to sleep - just like ours did. If you leave him he'll leave by himself in spring - if we ever get one!

Just wondered how you knew it was a squirrel? We didn't see our Beast as it stayed low during the day and went out at night.

It started with him rattling away in the attic for about 10 days - noise was too heavy for a bird/ mouse/rat and was clearly only one critter. I had seen him in the garden near the part of the house were he gets in (i think) He disappeared after our beasie settled down and reapperaed when we heard him get up in spring. Now he has his bed he doesn't scratch around nest building - just comes back and - i assume goes to bed as we only hear him on the first night. - He doesn't seem to do any harm or disturb us any more.
