I've been reading it, thankfully people like DJJ_France don't live around here or I would have to move.

I am amazed as well that this has been allowed to run, I put in my 2d's worth near the beginning to see what would happen, saying just go to Calais and stop moaning!! and sure enough the whiners said but it is too far and our Christmas will be spoiled - good, hate Christmas as well!!
Just for the record, not that it matters, but when I first started to come to France the BF timetable never fitted in with my working times. So for weekend in my Brittany holiday home, I would pack partner and 3 kids on car at 7pm on a Friday, starting from Taunton, drive to the newly opened Tunnel (3 hours), 1/2 hr kip on train, then drive 7 hours down to our house (no completed Mway at that time from Calais to Dinan) - 10 hours drive, get in about 5am, sleep for say 4 hours, get up and enjoy the Saturday and Sunday morning, then turn round on the same trip back home getting home about 11pm.
We always said what a great weekend in France, kids loved it. Did that about 10 times a year for 4 years. Finally moving over when the eldest 2 kids left home.
OK 10 hours for the trip, seems a lot till you compare the trip nowadays on the BF St Malo route to and from the same locations. 1 hour to St Malo, 1 hour wait whilst they kickstart the motors on the boat, 10 totally boring hours on the boat, 1 hour buggering about getting off the boat and through customs at Portsmouth, 2 1/2 hours drive to Taunton = total 15 1/2 hours.
Please don't try to convince me that BF is cheaper or more convenient - I bloody hate going to UK anyway and if I did not have family there I would never go again!!

Hahahahahhahahahaaa love it Meldrew! As you know I'm messing around daily with ferry crossings but has to be said sometimes tolls, service intervals, safety, driving hours etc etc ect till cows come home also must be taken into account. Ok, BF is maybe a few quid more spensive but.......

I must admit we used to drive Dieppe to Morlaix twice a year but got fed up with it.To long a drive not enough sleep. We now only go St Malo to Portsmouth, maybee next time Roscoff Plymouth. I would rather pay a bit more and have a lovely crossing with BF.For us the time away starts on the boat.

Is there any REAL reason why the crossing takes so long from Pompey to Caen anyway?
Years ago I went to Jersey on the Seacat thing and it went like the Wind, in fact you could'nt even stand upright on the smoking deck out the back so they stopped access to it. Two years ago I thought I'd give the thing a go on the Pompey/Caen one - it was a joke! I'm sure I saw swan pédalos overtaking it!!
The only excuse I can think of is that Caen is not a deepwater port and therefore subject to tidal restrictions, but honestly the six hours daytime or the ludicrous overnighter really are a joke. Its not as if you can sleep on the overnighter anyway because by the time they've faffed-about at the port, got you on board, given all the announcements then finally shut up, all the loutish uk schoolkids start running about the decks slamming doors so you cannot sleep anyway. I go daytimes now then my granddaughter gets to enjoy the kids entertainments, she does her disco dancing stuff to wow the crowds, we do the quiz (and yes we won once, the pair of us!!) then its time to get off in Caen.
I do concede that I prefer BF to the others though.
